How is XIOS different from Java Applets that also run in web browsers and are installed online?

Compared to XIOS applications, Java Applets offer limited out-of-the-box inter-application communication and it's not lightweight in terms of code. Furthermore, to create Windows style user friendly Java Applets is a painstaking process often ignored by programmers. Thus Java Applets' functional scope and quality is of less quality than XIOS applications.
